Harrison Grasshopper Escapement Long Case Clock

Harrison was a remarkable clock maker and designed the grasshopper escapement about 1740. The design owes its name to the mechanical action of the two pallets on the escape wheel which exactly like the hind legs of a grasshopper in action. At first built from wood, this type of escapement was eventually also used in his first four navigation clocks, all of which are on public display at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

The Meccano grandfather clock model of Harrison's clock fully reproduces the escapement action with attached second pendulum and is weight driven with maintaining power. It was shown at exhibitions in 1991 in Rotterdam, Barcelona and London.
